Market America... to "UnFranchise" or not?

Recently my wife was approached by a co-worker of hers about a money making opportunity she felt was something we really needed to pursue. She said my wife, myself or both of us could open our own business, work 10-15 hours a week and make many thousands of dollars. We could eventually receive weekly paychecks up to $3,600 once we have "followed the plan" for 2-3 years. All we had to do is come to some sort of seminar and pay $130 (per business) and go to work selling products online. We were told we would be provided all the needed tools and training to accomplish this.

My wife and I talked about this Market America business a little and decided we'd hold off on any decisions since honestly $130 dollars was going to be hard to part with because it was the holiday season. Now it's spring and my wife and I decided her management job was unhealthy for her mental health and it was time for her to leave her work at work permanently and be a stay at home mom once again. We are thinking this is a perfect time to jump aboard the UnFranchise bandwagon and make (hopefully) some decent money from home. We aren't looking for riches. Just a reliable income that can be worked on in bits and pieces while performing parenting and home making.

So we are now looking in to starting up this MLM or whatever it is. But information that appears credible is hard to come by on the web. Wikipedia doesn't even have a listing for this company? Most of the opinions that are negative are clearly given by people that have never dealt with Market America. I haven't found any proof that they are a scam. And the Better Business Bureau gives the company a perfect score. I see plenty of discussions online made by Market America distributors, or "UnFranchised business owners" that claim to already made their dream income, but few of them seem to attempt to recruit in their posts so that gives me the uneasy feeling that the posts were created by some sort of damage control team.

I plan to write more blog entries as I find out more about Market America and sort out the information that I already know. If any readers has any input about the company, and it's business model, I'd love to hear from you. I'm interested mainly hearing from people who work or worked for, or know a friend or relative who works for Market America.

  1. I have not heard good things about Market America and MLM businesses in general. Supposedly, only 97% of Market America un-franchise owners make any sort of income. Your profits depend largely on your downline and their spending. You have to spend a certain amount of money for month, ordering products through your web portal in order to meet requirements. I don't think I need to tell anyone that having to buy products and spend money in order to qualify to receive income is sketchy at best.

Perhaps you can explore other "make money from home" business ideas. It sounds like you have some internet know-how, there are many ways to acquire income using those skills. Although Market America seems to be a legitimate business (and not a scam,) you have to be one of the very lucky few, and be in the upper tier of "upline" in order to make any sort of substantial and reliable income. Residual income sounds very appealing, but in order to secure that residual income, you have to do everything short of sell your soul to the devil.

    Good luck to you!

  2. I forgot to mention, my information is from internet searches I have done on MLM businesses and Market America, and from a friend and another acquaintance. My friend lost almost $1,500, not realizing that once she placed an order through her web portal for the beauty products she was buying, the order would automatically repeat itself unless she changed her order and re-submitted. She returned many products when she realized what was happening, and was NOT reimbursed.

The other acquaintance (the son of a good friend) invested money initially, and found he couldn't afford to hang in there for 2-3 years, paying money every month without any profit from MA, and gave up....much poorer than when he started.

  3. I have to wonder how much this monthly quota really is? I'm sure we can peddle a few bottles of that Isotonix Opc-3 to some people I know right now. I've heard rave reviews about the product so I'm sure it would sell. But you can only stock up friends and family so much before they are tapped out. The drawback is the product isn't FDA approved (neither are Flintstones vitamins)so purchasing from "us" in behalf of a unknown company would be a challenge.

The wife and I aren't afraid of doing our time and working hard to achieve our goals, but if the goal is equivalent to hitting the lottery for the payoff while steadily "investing"... that makes me a little squeamish.

But even still, we are trying to keep a open mind about this topic. Just because someone fails something, doesn't mean we will.

  4. That's just it, few people actually ever "hit the lottery" with Market America or MLM businesses no matter how much time and money they invest. If you think this is a "get rich quick" business, or even a GET RICH business, I'm afraid statistics show you will probably be very disappointed.

There are many working form home options, home business options, internet business options, etc. out there...but very few people are actually successful at earning a true income and not just some extra supplemental income. Again, un-franchise businesses are a crap shoot at best. Don't lose your hat over a pipe dream.
